DJ Food Prices Rose in August as Supply Risks Mount, UN Says
By Giulia Petroni
World food prices rose in August as adverse weather and supply disruptions in the Middle East and Black Sea regions raised concerns over future supplies, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization said.
The FAO’s food price index–which tracks a basket of widely traded food commodities–averaged 133.3 points last month, up 1.9% from its July level and 2.5% higher than a year prior, as all commodity categories recorded higher prices overall.
“Climate shocks, geopolitical tensions and disrupted trade logistics are converging to tighten supply expectations,” FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero said on Friday.
Sugar prices climbed 11.9% on month in August to their highest level since June 2025. Hot, dry weather hurt sugarbeet yield prospects in the European Union, while the El Nino weather phenomenon weighed on production prospects in Asia and lower output in Brazil’s Center-South region added to supply concerns. India’s decision to allow duty-free raw sugar imports also supported prices.
Dairy prices recorded their first increase in four months, although they remained more than 20% below levels seen last year. Higher milk powder and cheese prices drove the gain, as tighter milk supplies and strong import demand in the EU more than offset seasonal production increases in Oceania. Butter prices were little changed.
Cereal prices rose 2.2% to their highest level since May 2024. Wheat prices were boosted by disruptions to Black Sea exports, and hot, dry weather in parts of Europe raised concerns about supplies. Maize prices increased as prolonged heat and dryness raised concerns about crops in the U.S. Corn Belt and the EU, while strong demand from the ethanol and feed sectors added further support.
Vegetable-oil prices rose for a third straight month, reaching their highest since June 2022. Higher palm and soy oil prices more than offset declines in sunflower and rapeseed oils. Palm oil prices were supported by strong global demand and concerns over El Nino-related weather risks in Southeast Asia, while soy oil remained firm on strong South American export demand. Sunflower and rapeseed oil prices eased on weaker import demand and expectations of ample supplies.
Meat also rose in August, driven by higher poultry, pork and sheep meat prices, while beef prices declined. Poultry prices increased on strong global import demand and a rebound in Brazilian export prices, while pork surged in the EU as hot weather limited supplies. Sheep meat prices also gained on tight New Zealand exports and firm demand. By contrast, beef prices fell as tighter access to key Asian markets intensified competition among exporters.

WHEAT:
General Comments: Wheat was lower in both markets yesterday as the Ukraine-Russia war continues and threatens any exports from the region. The president of Ukraine has said that his country and Russia would sit down soon to try to find a way for grains exports to resume from both countries, but Russia yesterday said a truce and increased exports from the Black Sea are now possible Ukraine has hit infrastructure in Russia again by hitting a space facility and Russia has hit back. The US Winter Wheat harvest is over. Spring Wheat is being harvested and is rated 51% good to excellent. Conditions are mixed in the US Midwest, but Europe has been too hot. The weather is now featuring scattered showers for parts of the Midwest along with moderate temperatures after a got week last week. The Great Plains should stay hot and dry.

CORN AND OATS
General Comments: Corn was lower yesterday after a strong rally seen last week in response to private estimates released this week and the results of the Pro Farmer tour last week and ideas of more potential losses from stressful weather around the world but especially in Europe and Asia. There is still too much hot and dry weather in the western and southern Midwest but moderating conditions in Europe. Ukraine and Russia are back at war again and shipping is very limited in both countries. It should be cooler with drier weather in the Midwest this week. The crop conditions are unchanged last week and below aa year ago. Progress is ahead of normal with maturity under way. Temperatures in the Midwest should be cooler this week. Oats were lower.
